Crisp Air, Colorful Views & Seasonal Adventures

Three friends enjoy coffee during autumn.

Fall in Routt County is here, and it’s the time of year for other seasonal joys—crisp mornings, golden leaves glowing in the sunshine, and just enough pumpkin spice to set the mood. There's no better time to get outside, soak up the season, and enjoy everything fall has to offer before winter settles in. Whether you’re wanting to cozy up indoors or venture out to breathe in that fresh mountain air, here are a few fun ways to stay active and make the most of autumn in Routt County.

Autumn Art Stroll

Join the First Friday Artwalk on Oct. 2, Nov. 6, or Dec. 4 and stroll through downtown galleries and shops while discovering talented local artists from the Yampa Valley and beyond. With crisp fall air and plenty of creativity around every corner, it’s a wonderful way to celebrate the season and connect with the community. For details, visit the First Friday Artwalk website.

Memory Café of the Yampa Valley

Memory Cafés provide a welcoming and supportive space for individuals experiencing memory loss and their caregivers to connect, relax, and enjoy the season together. Unlike traditional support groups, these gatherings focus on friendship, fun, and meaningful engagement. In a warm, judgment-free environment, participants can enjoy autumn-inspired activities, share stories and memories, and savor the season's simple joys—all while building friendships and fostering a strong sense of community. Blue Skies Nursing hosts Memory Cafés on the first Monday of each month at the Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church (736 Oak St, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487). You can RSVP here.

Upcoming Memory Cafés

  • Oct. 5 - Celebrate the Halloween season by making autumn wreaths and painting fall leaves, along with seasonal music and friendly social time.

  • Nov. 2 - Enjoy a cozy, fall-inspired gathering with themed activities, music, and opportunities to connect and create.

  • Dec. 7 - Join us for a festive Christmas holiday party with seasonal music, themed activities, and cheerful social time.

Fall Foliage Road Trips

Take in Steamboat’s spectacular fall foliage with a scenic hike or drive through the mountains. Rabbit Ears Pass offers iconic views of vibrant aspens, while North Routt County showcases colorful scenery around Steamboat Lake and Hahn’s Peak. Head south along Highway 131 toward Yampa for winding roads framed by brilliant aspen groves, or explore Buffalo Pass, where colorful forests begin just minutes from downtown. Wherever you wander, autumn puts on a show worth savoring. Help map your drive here.

Fall into the Yampa River Trail

Soak up the beauty of fall along the 7.5-mile Yampa River Core Trail. Walk or bike through Steamboat Springs while taking in crisp mountain air, golden foliage, and scenic river views. Stop along the way at the Yampa River Botanic Park, a peaceful six-acre sanctuary filled with gardens, ponds, sculptures, and colorful autumn scenery.

A Monster Mash

Calling all ghosts, goblins, witches, and vampires... it's time for a night out! The Hayden Center is hosting an Adult Halloween Party on Saturday, Oct. 24. Enjoy an evening of cocktails, dancing, music, and plenty of Halloween fun with friends and neighbors. Whether you come in full costume or just ready to celebrate, this is your chance to embrace the spooky season with a night made just for adults. More info here.

BONUS: Fall Footwear for Seniors

As temperatures drop and leaves begin to fall, we need footwear that is warm, supportive, slip-resistant, and easy to put on and take off. Whether you're walking in crisp autumn air or running quick errands around town, the right pair makes all the difference. Here’s what to look for:

  1. Slip-Resistant and Grippy Outsole: Fall’s beauty comes with a few challenges—wet leaves, rainy days, and uneven paths can make walking tricky. Slip-resistant shoes help seniors stay steady and confident with every step. We like Dr. Scholl’s Slip-Resistant Sneakers.

  2. Supportive Cushioning and Arch Support: For older adults, supportive footwear is key to reducing joint strain and maintaining stability. Look for styles that are easy to slip on and off—Velcro closures and slip-on designs make getting ready a breeze. We recommend these from New Balance.

  3. Waterproof or Water Resistant: As temperatures drop and the ground gets damp, keeping feet warm and dry becomes a must. For extra comfort and safety, choose shoes that also offer slip-resistant soles—perfect for navigating fall weather with confidence. We love Loom Waterproof Sneakers.

Together... we've got this!
