ree

Fall in Steamboat Springs is here, and it’s showing off in the best way—cool, refreshing mornings, golden leaves glowing in the sunshine, and yes, a little pumpkin spice in the air. 🍂 Before winter sneaks in, it’s the perfect time to soak up the season! Whether you’re cozying up inside or heading out to enjoy that crisp mountain air, here are some fun ways to stay active and make the most of fall.

Autumn Art Stroll

Join the fun at the First Friday Artwalk, which takes place on the first Friday of every month on Oct. 3, Nov. 7, and Dec. 5. Wander through the vibrant downtown of Steamboat Springs and discover amazing local artists from the Yampa Valley and beyond. It’s a perfect way to spend an evening soaking up creativity and connecting with the community. For all the details, visit the First Friday Artwalk website.

Memory Café of the Yampa Valley

Memory Cafés provide a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals with memory loss and their caregivers. Unlike traditional support groups, these gatherings focus on connection, fun, and meaningful engagement. In a relaxed, judgment-free environment, participants can enjoy festive activities, share stories, and build friendships that foster a sense of community. Hosted by Blue Skies Nursing and held on the first Monday of the month at the Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church (736 Oak St, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487).

Upcoming Memory Cafés

Oct. 6 - Come prepared for an afternoon of tricks & treats as we decorate pumpkins, cookies, and celebrate all things Halloween.

Nov. 3 -  Take a journey to the past!  Share stories of all your favorite Thanksgiving traditions and enjoy all your favorite fall pies.

Dec. 1 - Join us as we celebrate the holidays, sing carols, and share companionship.

October Fest-tivities

Celebrate the spirit of autumn at The Haven Assisted Living’s fourth annual OctoberFest on Oct. 5—a beloved, traditional fall festival that’s perfect for families and friends alike. This event brings together neighbors and local residents for a fun-filled afternoon complete with live music, delicious seasonal treats, pumpkin decorating, and plenty of activities that capture the cozy, festive vibe of fall. For more details and to purchase tickets, visit their website.

Fall Foliage Road Trips

As the valley comes alive with vibrant shades of gold, orange, and red, fall is the perfect time to hit the road and soak in the season’s beauty. Buffalo Pass offers a scenic drive through glowing aspen groves just a few miles from town. For a longer route, head south through Oak Creek, Phippsburg, and Yampa toward the Flat Tops, where wide-open views and brilliant foliage await. And of course, Rabbit Ears Pass is a must—an iconic stretch of Highway 40 known for its sweeping fall colors and panoramic mountain scenery.

Hello, Gourd-geous!

Get ready for a full day of fall fun at PumpkinFest on Oct. 12! Enjoy hayrides, a pumpkin patch, BBQ, live music, and tons of family-friendly activities like a kids’ hay maze, bee wagon, pony rides, pumpkin painting, archery, and more. There’s something for everyone! More info here.

Crisp Air Hikes

Get outside and enjoy your favorite trails before winter snow blankets the valley. One of our top picks is Fish Creek Falls—just a short drive from downtown Steamboat, it’s an easily accessible hike that’s great for the whole family. With multiple trail options, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the falls and a splash of fall color for an extra seasonal bonus.

Spook-tacular Fun

Prepare for a spooky, fun-filled evening on the ice! The Steamboat Skating Club invites you to their annual Fright Night on Sunday, Oct. 26. Grab your family and friends and enjoy a night of festive skating, Halloween vibes, and plenty of seasonal fun! Visit their website for more information and tickets.

Whether you're admiring golden leaves on a scenic drive, getting cozy at a local festival, or lacing up your boots for a crisp-air hike, fall in Steamboat Springs is full of moments to savor. So grab your favorite sweater, gather your friends and family, and make the most of this magical time before winter settles in.

BONUS: Fall Footwear for Seniors

As temperatures drop and leaves begin to fall, we need footwear that is warm, supportive, slip-resistant, and easy to put on and take off. Whether for walks in the crisp autumn air or quick errands around town, the right pair makes all the difference. Here’s what to look for:

1. Slip-Resistant and Grippy Outsole:

Fall’s beauty comes with a few challenges—wet leaves, rainy days, and uneven paths can make walking tricky. Slip-resistant shoes help seniors stay steady and confident with every step. We like Dr. Scholl’s Slip-Resistant Sneakers.

2. Supportive Cushioning and Arch Support:

For older adults, supportive footwear is key to reducing joint strain and maintaining stability. Look for styles that are easy to slip on and off—Velcro closures and slip-on designs make getting ready a breeze. We recommend these from New Balance.

3. Waterproof or Water Resistant:

As temperatures drop and the ground gets damp, keeping feet warm and dry becomes a must. For extra comfort and safety, choose shoes that also offer slip-resistant soles—perfect for navigating fall weather with confidence. We love Loom Waterproof Sneakers.
